Secret Santa Strikes Alexis
A few hours before Mr. Crime killed it at the Washington Improv Theater this Saturday night, I decided to go into my bag and fill my head with a little NY Times. Instead of clothes, deodorant and my Beretta 418, I was greeted by a small bag full of DVDs and a book.
“Whoops, this isn’t mine,” I thought, and I closed it.
Looking around at my fellow Mr. Crimers’ bags in the back of Karin’s friend’s apartment, I realized that this was indeed my own bag. I opened it again and recognized that Secret Santa had struck.
A week before, we put names in an envelope and began our Secret Santa. I hadn’t done one since grade school and just remembered being disappointed with all the gifts from my fellow students, receiving, in different years, socks, a textbook cover, and a giant pencil that didnt write! How unrelentingly funny would I have been in 3rd grade with a giant pencil that wrote, but alas.
It was safe to say that my first Secret Santa gift since my disastrous Slipper Socks of 4th grade (which nearly gave me a concussion) was overwhelming:
The complete first season of Saturday Night Live, the complete Abbott & Costello, and a collection of Weekly World News stories.
When I was 5 or 6 my dad started letting my stay up to watch Saturday Night Live. While we enjoyed it together, he talked a lot about how much funnier John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd could be with a lot less words in SNL’s first season.
Having that first season in my possession, along with the Abbott & Costello (I guess I’m Abbott), the collection of new characters I can steal from the Weekly World News, and the privilege to perform with Mr. Crime at sold-out theaters around the US, is a gift even I can’t put a price on.
(But I would start with $5700.)
